Picking Perfect Home Decor

Picking Perfect Home Decor

Janna Allbritton of Yellow Prairie Interiors in Salem, Oregon, has learned from her clients and her own experience that there are growing pains associated with selecting pieces that best suit your living spaces. It takes time, says Janna, to “feel” what makes a house a home. She offers the following advice for choosing furniture and accents:

Size Matters. Avoid choosing items that are too small for a large space or vice versa. Learn to judge the proper scale for both furnishings and accessories. For example, when Janna vaulted her kitchen ceiling, she picked oversize woven pendant lights for above her island.
Highlight Focal Features. Don’t draw attention away from key architectural elements by placing eye-catching decor next to them. Keep nearby pieces simple, like the neutral chair and pine table Janna chose to position alongside her home’s central staircase.
Break Rules. Step outside your comfort zone. Although Janna’s entry rug has pink in it—a color she rarely uses—the striking pattern also includes gray, cream and gold hues, which make it work well with the other finishes in her home.
